Skills & Standards

Aligned to CCSS ELA expectations, this lesson bundle addresses crosscutting concepts such as patterns in poetic structure and cause and effect in how ideas influence meaning. Students work with disciplinary core ideas in ELA: analyzing author’s choices, using figurative language appropriately, and writing text that follows a clear structure. Built-in supports include teacher modeling, opportunities for analytical reasoning, and practice producing evidence-based explanations that connect textual details to interpretations.

Perfect For

• Teachers seeking structured instruction
• Sub plans
• Homework or review
• Intervention or centers
• Assessment preparation

How to Use

Suggested pacing: complete the set across 2–3 days—Day 1 for reading and skills (Worksheet 1), Day 2 for background understanding and comprehension (Worksheet 2), and Day 3 for drafting and refinement (Worksheet 3). If you have block schedules, you can shorten to a single session by using the answer keys for immediate checks for understanding. For differentiation, have students complete Worksheet 1 and 2 in small groups, then use sentence frames during Worksheet 3 to strengthen evidence-based explanations and poem planning; for fast finishers, ask them to revise one stanza for word choice and rhythm.
