Overview

---

Engineering design process practice for Grade 6 Science helps students plan, test, and explain improvements using NGSS-aligned reasoning. This lesson bundle includes 3 worksheet-focused review and test prep pages that target NGSS expectations for engineering design at a manageable pace 🔧.

What’s Included

---

• ✅ Optimizing Designs Worksheet | Grade 6 Science | Review & Assessment – Students review optimization strategies and use a clear feedback-and-improvement sequence to strengthen design outcomes.
• ✅ Developing Solutions Test Prep Worksheet | Grade 6 Science NGSS – Learners practice developing solutions by connecting criteria and constraints to possible design improvements and next steps.
• ✅ Defining Problems Test Prep Worksheet | Grade 6 Science NGSS Review – Students refine problem statements and practice evidence-based explanations for what the design must achieve.

Skills & Standards

---

Aligned to the NGSS framework, these worksheets reinforce how to apply crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas within engineering design. Students use crosscutting concepts such as systems and system models to describe how parts work together, and they apply disciplinary core ideas from Engineering Design (ETS1) to set criteria, consider constraints, and justify choices. Throughout the tasks, students practice modeling by describing the structure of a solution and the relationships between variables, then applying analytical reasoning to predict results, compare outcomes, and decide what to revise next. Students also write evidence-based explanations that connect observations from testing to claims about why a redesign improves performance and meets criteria.

Perfect For

---

• Teachers seeking structured instruction
• Sub plans
• Homework or review
• Intervention or centers
• Assessment preparation

How to Use

---

Use this lesson bundle as a short multi-day rotation: Day 1 for defining the engineering problem, Day 2 for developing solutions, and Day 3 for optimizing designs and completing review questions. Suggested classroom setup: pair students for discussion, have them complete the worksheet individually, then use a quick share-out protocol to compare criteria/constraints and testing results. For centers, place a mini anchor chart (criteria, constraints, evidence, redesign) at each station and guide students to highlight the evidence they use for each explanation.
