Description

Scientific evidence and investigation become concrete in this Grade 5 Science learning stations activity, Evidence Detectives: Five Canadian Science Investigations. Students examine Canadian scientific investigations to distinguish qualitative observations from quantitative measurements, recognize measurement units, and decide how reliable evidence supports scientific conclusions.

Instead of treating scientific evidence as a collection of definitions, this activity asks students to think like investigators. They consider what scientists observed, what they measured, how information was collected, and what limitations might affect the conclusions drawn from that evidence.

Five Investigations, One Central Question

What makes scientific evidence convincing? Each station card gives students an opportunity to examine an investigation through the lens of evidence collection and reliability. As groups rotate, they record their thinking on a separate station recording sheet, building a comparison of the different investigations.

The activity focuses on important Grade 5 scientific inquiry skills:

  • Qualitative evidence: Identify descriptive observations and explain their contribution to an investigation.
  • Quantitative evidence: Distinguish numerical measurements from observations expressed in words.
  • Measurement units: Recognize how scientists communicate measured quantities clearly.
  • Evidence and conclusions: Explain how observations and measurements support scientific claims.
  • Reliability: Consider how instruments and repeated observations affect confidence in evidence.
  • Scientific limitations: Recognize why evidence may not support every possible conclusion.

What Teachers Receive

  • Five Canadian science investigation station cards for group rotation.
  • A student station recording sheet for documenting evidence and observations.
  • A station wrap-up activity for consolidating and discussing findings.
  • An Answer Key PDF containing the Teacher Guide.
  • Teacher Guide sections covering Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Discussion Questions, and Common Mistakes.

How the Station Rotation Works

Place the investigation cards at different locations around the classroom. Assign small groups to starting stations and provide each student with a recording sheet. Students read their assigned investigation, identify relevant scientific evidence, and record their responses without writing on the station cards.

After the allotted time, groups rotate to another investigation. Once every group has visited the stations, bring the class together for the wrap-up. Students can compare the evidence presented across investigations and discuss why some observations or measurements may provide stronger support for particular conclusions.

From Observing to Evaluating Evidence

A useful distinction in elementary scientific inquiry is that numerical information is not automatically more reliable than descriptive information. The quality of an observation, the suitability of a measuring instrument, and the opportunity to repeat measurements all influence how confidently scientists interpret results.

This Canadian science investigation activity gives teachers a structured way to explore those distinctions while developing scientific reasoning, evidence comparison, and classroom discussion. With the recording sheet, investigation cards, and teaching guidance organized around the same inquiry focus, students can move beyond identifying evidence types toward explaining why evidence matters.

Designed for Grade 5 Science with Alberta identified as the curriculum framework, this resource supports instruction on scientific investigation, observation, measurement, and evidence reliability without requiring students to conduct separate experiments.
