Climate Change Drivers and Energy Balance is a Grade 12 Earth and Space Science worksheet that examines how climate drivers affect Earth’s energy balance and climate patterns. Students investigate how changes in greenhouse gases affect outgoing heat and compare natural and human drivers across different timescales.

Climate Drivers in Context

The resource focuses on the relationship between greenhouse gases and Earth’s energy balance, helping students explain how changes in greenhouse gases affect outgoing heat. Students also compare natural climate drivers such as volcanoes, El Niño, and orbital changes with human drivers including greenhouse gases and aerosols.

Attention to timescales helps students identify how different drivers can influence climate trends and weather patterns. This gives learners a framework for distinguishing among drivers while connecting individual changes to broader climate behavior.

What Students Do

Students work through multiple-choice questions, true-or-false statements, short-answer responses, a dialogue, matching, a cloze passage, a labeled diagram, a reading passage, and an essay. These activities provide opportunities to identify climate drivers, compare their effects, interpret energy-balance concepts, and communicate explanations about climate trends and weather patterns.

Teacher Support

• Student worksheet: Practice focused on climate change drivers and Earth’s energy balance.
• Teacher Guide: Separate PDF containing learning objectives, teaching tips, discussion questions, and common mistakes.

Classroom Applications

Use this Grade 12 climate science resource during Earth and Space Science instruction, guided practice, independent work, review, or assessment. The combination of conceptual questions and explanatory tasks supports classroom discussion about natural versus human climate drivers and the different timescales over which they operate.

The separate teacher guide adds practical preparation and discussion support, while the range of response formats gives students multiple ways to demonstrate their reasoning about greenhouse gases, aerosols, volcanoes, El Niño, orbital changes, and energy balance.
