Description

A TABLET FIZZES AWAY AND THE BALANCE DROPS 1.5 GRAMS. WAS MATTER DESTROYED?

Nothing was spilled. Nothing was taken out. This 45-60 minute phenomenon lesson hands students six real measurements and asks them to work out what actually happened.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

The six measurements are run as MATCHED PAIRS - the same reaction once in an open container and once sealed. Because the container is the only thing that changes, students can see for themselves that the reaction did not behave differently; the measurement did.

One result deliberately breaks the pattern. Burning steel wool GAINS 1.6 g. That kills the easy rule "open means mass goes down" and pushes students to the idea the standard actually asks for: matter crosses the boundary of a system in whichever direction the reaction demands, and in a closed system it cannot cross at all.

It also targets the misconception that quietly blocks this whole topic - that gas has no mass. The steel wool row is the antidote, because the only thing added was air.

No lab materials are needed. Students analyze supplied data, so the lesson works in any classroom and on any budget. Safety notes are included for teachers who want to demonstrate.

WHAT STUDENTS DO

  1. Notice and wonder about the phenomenon
  2. Work out the change in mass for six measurements
  3. Compare matched open and sealed pairs to find the pattern
  4. Decide whether matter left the system, entered it, or stayed
  5. Draw particle models of an open and a sealed container
  6. Write a claim, evidence, and reasoning explanation
  7. Exit ticket: explain the campfire log

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • 4 print-ready student pages (letter size, black and white)
  • 4-page teacher guide
  • Complete answer key with formative look-fors
  • Minute-by-minute facilitation sequence
  • Anticipated misconceptions and response moves
  • Quick rubric for the particle model and the CER
  • Safety notes for optional demonstrations
  • Full NGSS three-dimensional alignment

STANDARDS

NGSS MS-PS1-5 - Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved.

  • DCI: PS1.B Chemical Reactions
  • SEP: Developing and Using Models
  • CCC: Energy and Matter

Assessment boundary respected: no atomic masses, no balancing symbolic equations, no intermolecular forces. Student models stay at the "circles for atoms" level.

PLEASE NOTE

This is a phenomenon launch, not an end-of-unit assessment. Students build a deliberately incomplete first model that they revise as the unit continues, and the teacher guide explains how to run it that way.

FORMAT

Prints at 100% scale on letter paper, double-sided, 2 sheets per student. Fully usable in black and white. Zero prep, no lab materials, no student devices required.
