Description

Credibility and Bias in Media Messages is a Grade 6 ELA media literacy worksheet that teaches students how to evaluate whether media claims are trustworthy and recognize common forms of bias. Within an Ontario framework, students use evidence, quotation accuracy, source transparency, and comparison to examine how facts and opinions are presented.

Evaluate Before You Trust

The resource introduces credibility as the likelihood that a claim is trustworthy. Students learn to check who created a report, where its information came from, and whether evidence is shown. They also examine how statistics become more credible when important details such as a time frame, sample size, or method are provided.

Students then apply credibility checks to media footage and quotations. They consider whether a reporter's claim matches what viewers can actually see and why exact quotations should be accurately attributed and presented with appropriate context. These checks help students identify situations where accurate-looking information may still create a misleading impression.

Spot Bias and Compare Messages

The lesson focuses on bias techniques including loaded language, selective images, emotional appeals, and missing counter-evidence. Students explore how showing only scenes that support one side while excluding opposing viewpoints can influence an audience's interpretation.

A key comparison skill asks students to examine two media messages about the same topic. They consider differences in context, intent, facts, opinions, evidence, and viewpoints to judge which message appears more credible and less biased.

Practice the Evaluation Process

Students work through a reading passage followed by multiple-choice questions, true-or-false statements, short-answer questions, matching, a cloze passage, an extended response, and a Did You Know section. Activities ask students to identify credibility evidence, evaluate statistics, check claims against footage, assess quotation accuracy, recognize loaded language and selective images, and compare messages.

The extended response presents two messages about the same school rule and asks students to determine which appears more credible and less biased using credibility or bias checks from the lesson.
