Machine learning and training data is introduced through a Grade 5 Computer Science worksheet focused on how artificial intelligence systems learn from examples, identify patterns, build models, and make predictions about new data.

What Students Explore

Students examine how training data provides examples that help a computer system find patterns and build a model. The resource uses an apple-and-orange example to make ideas such as color, shape, size, prediction, model performance, and varied training data concrete and accessible. Students also consider why limited or incorrect examples can lead to weaker results and why testing with new examples matters.

Student Practice

The worksheet combines a dialogue, matching activity, cloze passage, labeled diagram, and reading passage with multiple-choice, true-or-false, short-answer, and extended-response questions. The tasks ask students to identify training data, explain how models use learned patterns, recognize useful features in examples, and describe how testing can help people judge model performance.

Teacher Support

A separate Teacher Guide PDF is included with Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Discussion Questions, and Common Mistakes. This gives teachers practical support for introducing machine learning concepts, discussing how training examples influence predictions, and addressing common misunderstandings about what a model does.

Classroom Use

Use this resource for Grade 5 computer science instruction on artificial intelligence and smart technology, as guided practice during a lesson, independent student work, or a review of machine learning concepts. The reading and written-response tasks also provide opportunities for students to explain the relationship between examples, patterns, models, and predictions in their own words.
