Natural Selection and Adaptation is the focus of this Grade 7 Science worksheet on biological evolution, helping students connect heritable variation, environmental pressures, survival, reproduction, and changes in populations over generations.

Build Evolutionary Reasoning

Students examine how heritable variation and environmental pressures influence which traits become more common in a population. They distinguish short-term changes in trait frequencies from longer-term evolutionary trends and use natural selection to explain how differential survival and reproduction can lead to adaptation.

Real examples make the concepts concrete, including antibiotic resistance and island finches. The activities give students opportunities to explain evolutionary patterns rather than simply recall terminology.

What Students Work Through

• Multiple-choice questions on natural selection, variation, environmental pressures, adaptation, and population change
• True-or-false statements that check understanding of key evolution concepts
• Short-answer responses requiring students to explain biological relationships
• A dialogue activity that applies ideas through student-facing discussion
• A matching activity connecting related concepts
• A cloze passage focused on essential evolutionary ideas
• A labeled diagram for visualizing the process
• A reading passage followed by questions that apply the lesson concepts
• An essay that provides extended written practice with evolutionary reasoning

Ready for Classroom Use

Use this natural selection worksheet as independent practice, a lesson activity, review, or a way to check student understanding after instruction on biological evolution. The varied response formats provide several ways for students to demonstrate their thinking across the same core concepts.

Teacher Support Included

A separate Teacher Guide PDF provides learning objectives, teaching tips, discussion questions, and common mistakes. This gives teachers practical support for introducing the concepts, guiding discussion, and addressing likely misunderstandings while using the student worksheet.

The resource is designed around the NGSS framework and centers on the relationship between variation, environmental pressures, differential survival and reproduction, adaptation, and evolutionary change in populations.
