Resource influences on human settlement is the focus of this Grade 11 Science worksheet on Earth and Human Activity, with an emphasis on how natural resources, environmental hazards, climate change, and sustainability shape human decisions.

Students examine how fertile soil, reliable water, minerals, and energy resources can influence settlement patterns, land use, agriculture, and economic development. The resource also connects environmental pressures with human responses, including how sea-level rise, storm surge, and drought can change land use, settlement decisions, and migration.

What students practice

The worksheet develops evidence-based reasoning around the relationships between human activity and environmental conditions. Students consider how resource extraction can provide economic benefits while reducing ecosystem services such as clean water, soil fertility, and flood protection. They also evaluate sustainability trade-offs and the role of feedbacks in planning decisions.

Students work through a reading passage followed by multiple-choice questions, true-or-false statements, short-answer responses, a labeled diagram, a categorization activity, and a short note task. Questions ask students to identify relationships described in the passage, explain drought-driven migration, evaluate resource-extraction trade-offs, and explain why planners must consider environmental risks alongside economic development.

Built for classroom use

This Earth and Human Activity worksheet can support direct instruction, guided practice, independent work, review, or assessment. The regional and environmental examples give students a context for connecting environmental evidence with human decisions rather than treating settlement patterns as isolated facts.
