Rosh Hashanah and lunar and solar calendars are the focus of this Grade 6 Holiday resource, helping students explain why Rosh Hashanah can appear on different solar-calendar dates while remaining connected to the Hebrew month of Tishrei.

What students explore

Students read an informational passage about solar calendars, lunar calendars, the Jewish calendar, Tishrei, and leap months. They use calendar clues to compare timing systems and explain how a lunar year can shift relative to the solar year while calendar adjustments help keep holiday timing connected to the seasons.

The practice moves from identifying key facts to applying ideas from the passage. Students work with multiple-choice questions, true-or-false statements, short-answer prompts, a matching activity, an extended written response, and a Did You Know section. The extended response asks students to connect both calendar types and explain why Rosh Hashanah can occur on different solar-calendar dates.

Classroom Use

Use this worksheet as a focused lesson activity, independent practice, review, or a way to reinforce calendar vocabulary and reading-based reasoning. The progression from informational reading to selected-response and written tasks gives students several ways to demonstrate their grasp of lunar and solar calendar concepts.

The included Teacher Guide supports instruction with practical teaching tips, discussion questions, learning objectives, and common mistakes to watch for. This makes the resource useful when introducing Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew calendar timing, lunar calendars, solar calendars, and leap months in a Grade 6 classroom.

Students finish by applying the central idea in their own explanation: different calendar systems use different timing references, and the Jewish calendar uses adjustments that help maintain a connection between lunar-based months and the seasons.
