Search Skills and Keywords is a Grade 6 Computer Science worksheet that teaches students how to use keywords, build focused search queries, and evaluate online search results. Designed for the Networks and Internet topic, this resource develops practical research skills students can apply when looking for accurate, relevant information online.

From Broad Searches to Better Results

Students explore how search engines respond to the words entered into a search field and why specific keywords can make research more efficient. They compare broad searches, such as “animals,” with focused queries, such as “sea turtle nesting habits,” to see how additional details can reduce unrelated results. The lesson also reinforces an important digital research habit: a result appearing near the top of a list does not automatically mean it answers the research question.

Through examples involving plant growth, recycling programs, ocean plastic pollution, local weather, and school gardens, students practise choosing appropriate search terms and refining queries to match an information need. They also examine webpage titles and descriptions, check whether information answers a question, and consider how comparing suitable pages can improve understanding.

What Students Practise

• Dialogue activity: Explore search skills through a conversational learning task.
• Matching activity: Connect related search concepts and terminology.
• Cloze passage: Apply key vocabulary in a passage about keywords, queries, search results, and refining searches.
• Labeled diagram: Reinforce the visual process of searching for online information.
• Reading comprehension: Read “How Keywords Improve Online Searches” to examine broad and focused queries, relevance, and search refinement.
• Multiple-choice questions: Apply search strategies to realistic research scenarios.
• True-or-false questions: Check understanding of queries, keyword choices, and result evaluation.
• Short-answer questions: Explain how to narrow searches and judge the usefulness of results.
• Extended response: Plan a search strategy for researching how school gardens help pollinators, including broad and improved queries.

Included Teacher Support

The resource includes the student worksheet and a separate Teacher Guide PDF featuring Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Discussion Questions, and Common Mistakes. These notes provide instructional support for introducing search terminology, discussing effective research choices, and addressing misconceptions about search results.

Practical Classroom Applications

Use this Grade 6 internet research worksheet during a Computer Science lesson on networks and the internet, as guided practice before a research assignment, or as independent work to reinforce effective search habits. The varied tasks give students opportunities to read, identify, compare, explain, and apply strategies rather than simply memorising definitions.

Students finish with a clearer process for online research: identify the information needed, choose meaningful keywords, construct a focused query, evaluate the results, and revise the search when necessary. This resource is a practical addition to lessons on search engines, keyword selection, search query construction, and evaluating online information.
