Solar System scale and space science come together in this Grade 6 Science worksheet on Earth's place in the universe. Students investigate planetary size, distance, orbital period, and the challenge of representing enormous solar system measurements through proportional relationships, scale models, log scales, and orders of magnitude.

From Astronomical Units to Planetary Size

A focused reading passage introduces the astronomical unit (AU), planetary radius, orbital period, terrestrial planets, gas giants, scale models, log scales, and orders of magnitude. Students use these ideas to interpret why Earth and Jupiter differ in size, why planets farther from the Sun generally have longer orbital periods, and why a single scale model may not represent both planetary size and orbital distance accurately.

Practice With Real Space Relationships

Students apply the concepts through multiple-choice questions, true-or-false statements, and short-answer questions. A labeled diagram, categorization activity, and short note extend the work beyond recall. Tasks ask students to compare planetary radii, interpret what one AU represents, identify what orbital period measures, reason about proportional planet widths, and explain why log scales are useful for measurements spanning very large ranges.

What the Teacher Receives

• Student worksheet focused on scale of space in the solar system
• Student Notes lines at the bottom of the worksheet
• Answer Key PDF with an included Teacher Guide
• Teacher Guide with Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Discussion Questions, and Common Mistakes

Flexible Classroom Use

This Grade 6 space science worksheet can support instruction on Earth's place in the universe, guided reading, independent practice, review, or classroom assessment. The progression from explanatory reading to data interpretation and written reasoning gives students opportunities to connect vocabulary with quantitative relationships instead of treating planetary measurements as isolated facts.

With an NGSS framework identified in the resource, the lesson provides focused practice in comparing planetary sizes and distances, interpreting astronomical units and orbital periods, using proportional relationships, and explaining how scale models and orders of magnitude help represent very large spatial relationships.
