WHY ISN'T EVERY PLACE ON EARTH GIVEN THE SAME RESOURCES?

A town can sit on top of enough copper to supply a country while a town 200 miles away has almost none. This 45-60 minute phenomenon lesson hands students five real U.S. resource sites and asks them to figure out why.


WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

No invented scenarios. Students analyze five actual sites - copper at Morenci, Arizona; coal in southern West Virginia; oil and gas in the Permian Basin, Texas; groundwater in the Nebraska High Plains; and geothermal energy at The Geysers, California - all described from public-domain USGS and U.S. Energy Information Administration sources.

The data table gives students only what scientists FIND in the ground. The formation story is deliberately left out, because that story is the answer. Students have to infer the mechanism themselves instead of copying it off the page.

The five sites are chosen so the pattern isn't trivial. Two formed from things that were once alive, two are tied to Earth's heat, and groundwater fits neither. That pushes students past "alive or hot" to the real generalization the standard asks for: a resource is where it is because a specific past process happened in that specific place.
